Holocaust Memorial Day

For the past 10 years, AJR has proudly supported the remarkable growth of Northwood Holocaust Memorial Day Events (NHMDE). Last year, over 3,000 secondary school students and teachers from over 50 schools in the London Boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon and Hertfordshire County Council attend half-day workshops in January and February organised and co-hosted by a large team of volunteers from Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue, Northwood United Synagogue and other local synagogues. NHMDE provides a unique opportunity for young people to meet a Holocaust survivor, hear their testimony and work in small groups with trained facilitators to explore the historic context. Its organisers consult with a range of Holocaust educational organisations in developing and delivering the content in line with current guidelines for good practice, and the programme is endorsed by the Local Education Authorities of Harrow, Hertfordshire and Hillingdon. NHMDE, the largest event of its type in the UK, is free of charge and non-denominational. AJR is particularly pleased that many other UK synagogues have subsequently adopted the Northwood blueprint to promote teaching and learning about the Holocaust, including the programme delivered by the Finchley Reform Synagogue, which the AJR is also proud to support.
