Academic conferences

As part of the AJR’s commitment to encouraging emerging scholarship in the field of Holocaust studies, we supported a conference in September 2017 at the University of London Senate House entitled, ͞Emigration from Nazi-Occupied Europe to British Overseas Territories after 1933͟. This conference was the first on the subject to be held in Britain and marked a significant milestone in the scholarly exploration of an often neglected aspect of the refugee experience – those who fled to locations such as South Africa, New Zealand, India and the West Indies. The conference was organised by the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies, based at the Institute of Modern Languages Research in the University of London. It provided an important platform for speakers ranging from internationally known experts to doctoral students working on under-researched aspects of the subject. Significantly, its organisers, including the AJR’s own Dr Tony Grenville, viewed this gathering as an opportunity to raise the profile of this important topic and spark further interest in the field amongst a new generation of researchers.
